Bissighin, Burkina Faso, 27 July 2015--- The official launch of PSUP physical infrastructure projects took place recently in Bissighin, Burkina Faso, to mark the effective start of physical implementation of work on the ground.

The launch took place amid a warm reception from Bissighin community members and was well attended by various participants from the community, members of the special delegation of the city of Ouagadougou, technical and financial partners involved in the development sector including UNDP, EU, World Bank, Agence Française de Développement, Union Economique et Monétaire Ouest Africaine, UNFPA, the Belgian Embassy, the Embassy of Sweden and the UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Pascal Karorero.

The projects are expected to result in improved drainage of rainwater, the redevelopment of the operating bancotière, improved access to health and maternity facilities through the construction of a health center and the establishment of the district committee of Bissighin. Mr. Kanorero explained that a residents’ committee would be set up through a participatory approach, to ensure effective implementation of activities.

“To meet the critical needs of the local population, interventions put in place in Phase 3 of PSUP will need to be more targeted. Attention has been placed on a small area for more efficiency and visibility, in line with the concentration of activities and available resources. Particular emphasis is being placed on monitoring and evaluation and lessons learnt will enable the implementation of the projects at a larger scale,’’ added Mr. Kanorero.

The area neigbourhood chief praised the partnership between the PSUP and the Government of Burkina Faso and their leadership and commitment to meeting the urban development challenges faced in Burkina Faso. He went on to emphasize the importance of the launch, expressing his hope for more similar interventions in the future.
