By the end of 2010, over 43 million people worldwide had been forcibly displaced due to conflict and persecution. In addition, during 2010, over 400 natural disasters were reported killing over 300,000 people and affecting more than 300 million people. This made it the second worst year since 1980. The corresponding scale of global shelter need has required a diversity of approaches that go beyond simple design solutions.

In addition, during 2009, 335 reported natural disasters killed over 10,000 people and affected more than 119 million people. The corresponding scale of global shelter need has required a diversity of approaches that go beyond simple design solutions.
UN-Habitat in Partnership with Arab States

Latin America and the Caribbean is the most urbanised region in the world with 80 per cent of its population living in towns and cities. Today, the cities of Latin America and the Caribbean are at a crossroads: after decades in which central and local governments seemed unable to manage this rapid urbanisation, they now have the potential to achieve sustainable urban development in the years and decades to come.
