Taking Sustainable Urban Mobility To The Next Level
Video 1: The Need for Sustainable Urban Mobility
Stefanie Holzwarth, UN-Habitat
This course aims at providing an overview of the challenges that are connected to car-focused urban development in fast growing cities in the world such as traffic congestion, road crashes or Greenhouse Gas Emissions and pollution. The speaker calls for a paradigm shift towards people-centered mobility and introduces the Avoid-Shift-Improve Framework of Sustainable Urban Mobility.
Video 2: Sustainable mobility solutions. Integrated proven technology
Wolfram Auer, Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH
This lecture emphasizes global challenges and developments in public transport and the achievements in regards to integrated mobility systems. In the second part, the speaker will focus on cable propelled transit systems as sustainable transport modes which not only solve mobility challenges but also trigger positive developments in disadvantaged urban areas.
Video 3: Policy options and economic instruments for Sustainable Public Transport
Sergio Avelleda, WRI
To manage the demand to support public transport, economic instruments can be applied that include congestion pricing, low emission zones, or parking regulations. The speaker will introduce such tools on national and local levels that help to reduce individual motorized transport and to achieve the decarbonization goals.
Video 4: Policy Instruments for Integrated Urban Mobility
Sergio Avelleda, WRI
Growing urbanization leads to mobility challenges – that come with the need to prioritize the right mobility solution for the local context. The speaker will refer to Transport Policies and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans that have proven to be suitable tools to examine the best mobility solution for a sustainable development scenario.
Video 5: Financing Options for Sustainable Urban Mobility
Veronika Pliats-Shirzadi, KfW Development Bank
The course sheds light onto the need for financing sustainable urban mobility. The speaker introduces challenges and opportunities for development banks when financing mobility projects, and also shares key criteria for providing and accessing funding. This is backed up by successful examples of sustainable transport investments from around the world.
Video 6: Low Carbon Mobility Solutions
Kai Landwehr, MyClimate
This lecture showcases that the transport sector is a major contributor to Global Greenhouse Gas emissions. If the Paris Climate Agreement shall be met, low carbon mobility solutions are urgently needed. The speaker emphasizes the need to link transport with energy supply and environmental protection - and introduces opportunities for climate mitigation measures in the transport sector incl. electric mobility, car free zones, cycling policies among others.
Video 7: Data, innovation and smart mobility
Wieland Rhenau, Deutsche Bahn
To improve transportation, cities need to understand their entire mobility ecosystem. Big data analysis is increasingly recognized for its potential to optimize urban mobility. This lecture explains why big data is critical for transportation planning and introduces innovative and smart mobility options. The speaker will share the example of Deutsche Bahn, the German railway system.

Hello – and great to see that you want to learn more about the Academy of Sustainable Urban Mobility.
The Academy of Sustainable Urban Mobility (AoSUM) was established by a partnership between Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH and UN-Habitat in April 2017. After a successful launch in April 2017 in Germany and Austria, and a second edition in 2018 – a third edition of the Academy took place in 2019 in La Paz, Bolivia, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Since its inauguration, additional partners were mobilized each year including the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative, the World Resources Institute, Molinari Rail, PTV Group, or Airbus.
AoSUM illustrates a capacity building and networking opportunity in which inspiring examples of mobility projects and solutions are being showcased through lectures and field visits. The Academy aims at decision-makers who wish to gain an advanced understanding of Sustainable and Innovative Urban Mobility Solutions and exchange their experience with like-minded. The participation is open for representatives of local, regional or national governments, transport operators or transport authorities.
The Academy specifically aims to:
- Orient decision-makers to develop an alternative paradigm for urban mobility in their city - that seeks to improve accessibility by introducing more efficient, inclusive, safe and innovative public transport integrated with active mobility modes;
- Facilitate exchange among decision-makers on best practices around sustainable urban mobility and land use integration;
- Foster discussions among urban practitioners, experts and system providers on innovative mobility solutions;
- Learn how to successfully embed innovative mobility solutions in mobility planning, policies & regulation;
- Be introduced to sustainable funding mechanisms, including the applicability of public-private partnerships;
- Build a knowledge base and partnership platform for continuous exchange on sustainable urban mobility.
Since its launch in 2017, a total 72 participants from 37 different countries have benefited from the Academy of Sustainable Urban Mobility. You could be one of them!
If you are interested to participate in a future Academy, you can express your interest below and we will share further information on the application process in due time.
